Green-n-Groovy

Published by Cathy under eco-fashion

I’ve been saving a clipping of an interview with Lisa Boucher from a local newspaper waiting for an opportunity to explore her website and post about it here on AllChic. Well now I’m wondering why I waited so long. Lisa is the owner of  Green-n-Groovy, an earth-friendly boutique in Northeast PA. Lisa sells the work of 78 artisans and is always on the lookout for new artists to work with on a consignment basis.  Lisa sells clothing, jewelry, home accessories, furniture, baby items and artwork…almost everything made from recycled materials. My personal favorite is the jewelry made from typewriter keys. Wandering through her website catalogue just might be inspiring me to get back to work on my jeans bags.

Emma Watson Launches Fair Trade Line

Published by Cathy under eco-fashion

EW

Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame has joined forces with People Tree to launch her own line of fair-trade and ethical fashion due out later this month.  According to this article in the Daily Mail

The aim was to create a range for teenagers that appealed to their consciences as well as their sense of cool. ‘We’re not asking for the sympathy vote,’ says Safia. ‘Our designs need to hold up against the high street but also have that level of quality and integrity that you just don’t get from fast fashion.

When asked where she gets her inspiration Watson said

I went through my summer wardrobe and thought, ‘If I filtered this so that it was just the very basics, what would I want to keep?’ The answer was cotton vests, easy T-shirt dresses, nice scarves to accessorise with and some lovely linen pieces. For the boys’ range I’ve done hoodies, which I know they’ll love. The clothes are very British, which is why we shot them in an English country garden – it’s all very strawberries and cream and tennis.

Richard Nicoll :: stripe ruffle

This striped ruffled shirt is made of my favorite colored pin-striped cotton material. (Second only to the horizontal stripes in the style of the French Sailor tee).

The striped ruffle shirt is by Richard Nicoll for People Tree and is made by Artisan Hut in Bangladesh.

Here’s how People Tree explains their Fair Trade business model:

When you look at business like this – as a tool to support people – great things can be achieved. We actively support 50 Fair Trade producer groups, in 15 developing countries.

For example, we provide training to artisans and their organisations so they can improve their skills, and strengthen their businesses and social impact. And we regularly make 50% advance payments on orders, to help farmers and producer groups to finance Fair Trade. We often put money into local communities too, like in Kumbeshwar Technical School, Kathmandu, where we help fund education for children who would not otherwise have access to education.

We also allow enough time for production by hand, which is very rare in this world dominated by fast fashion.

Each group that we work with is unique. Many are founded specifically to deal with a crisis or social issues in a particular area or community.

So, one group promotes livelihoods, agricultural development and seed banks for indigenous Peruvians, another empowers physically disabled people in Kenya, and yet another provides vital income to hand-weavers in rural Bangladesh. Incomes are doubled on average, key changes put place help develop these communities – and their pride. And after all, we all like to be treated with respect.

Inspirational groups like these are transforming lives through Fair Trade partnerships. The fact that they provide us with beautiful alpaca knits, intricately-crafted jewellery, and delicate silks is incidental. (Well, almost! It’s what makes it sustainable and not just an intellectual pursuit.)

License Plate Purse

Published by Cathy under eco-fashion

I had a chance to visit the Scranhatton Festival over the weekend for a taste of music, art, and film in Northeast PA. One of the vendors was from the locally owned DressMe Up Boutique. On display were hand-painted vintage bags from Lea Philips and bags made from recycled materials. A quick check on their website and I found this very original license-plate bag – the new FenderFlair Purse from Little Earth.

Two license plates and unique chrome teardrop shaped ends, crystallized twist-knob closure, hundreds of Swarovski Crystals, a 21″ recycled rubber strap, fully-lined velvet interior with velvet pocket, and a signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity, 12.5″ x 6″ x 3″ (L x H x W) – Little Earth Retail Price: $280.00+Shipping – order online here.

Earth Day Fashion

earth day fashion

MaryInk and Recycled by Hyena came together in a great collaboration to make what I think is the perfect top to post for Earth Day ‘08.  I found this top through ScratchFashion.com, a group of Clothing Designers who sell on ETSY. Each designer creates clothing, designing and handmaking it from scratch.
